I was looking at the notes & p2c2e reblogged this and added:

EXACTLY.  I cannot stand people who think like that.  Too many people are OBLIVIOUS to their own privilege (absolutely including the person who wrote this sign).  Don’t you realize that not everyone is born in a situation where they have a stable family life, a financially secure or comfortable family life, or even access to a decent education?  If someone was NEVER given the means or opportunities to become “a hardworking individual” like the person who wrote this, then that is NOT THEIR FAULT and you NEED TO STOP BLAMING THEM.  It is OUR FAULT, as a society, for failing them, and then judging them for the chances we denied them.

This is kind of gross in the sense that it not only imitates and mocks the campaign style of the protestors but it deceptively tries to twist your views with some bullshit “hard working” moral rhetoric that is very narrow and has ZERO perspective.

What if you aren’t in poverty, what if you were given all the opportunity to an education but with a price. Bottom line is there is only a limited amount of scholarship money and realistically not ALL the “hard working” students can get full coverage even cumulatively. Say you’re from a middle class well-to-do family, having less access to certain low-income grants and scholarships, and end up having to pay more and ending up with debt. There are some things that are beyond your control and accepting living at the bottom line out of necessity despite trying to disguise it behind philosophical and psychological contentment is deceptively self-destructive and is the ideal model for us 99% in the eyes of the 1%.

I guess I don’t get it. I don’t see what’s wrong with what this girl does. I admire and respect her foresight and hard work. I guess what’s upsetting everyone is the “it’s your decision” comment. I think other people see capitalism as giving a person the dignity to improve their life for his or herself rather than to forever be a ward of the state, which is what you are if you depend on the government to provide for your life. Whether you agree or disagree with this girl, let’s not call her “stupid” for her work ethic. Don’t you want your nurses, teachers, social workers, babysitters to work this hard for you? 

Don’t take this as me disagreeing with everything OWS stands for. The only thing that can make the world go round is compassion and cooperation; and the divide between the rich and the poor is sometimes akin to a caste system. I’m only disagreeing with telling this girl she is WRONG for what she does. I prefer people like her to people who think life should be easy.

In a traditional hunter-gatherer society, it takes approximately 6 hours of work per WEEK per adult to provide food, shelter, medicine, etc for your family. Not saying I want that life but I dunno how we got to where we are now. My boyfriend works 56 hours a week for above minimum wage pay just so we dont have to live in poverty eating saimin for every meal. I don’t think people want to be wards of the state or to be helpless, but I think our effort is worth more than what we’re getting. Prices of everything rise constantly but the minimum wage rate barely moves.

I have yet to see an argument that says life should be easy, big corporations should pay so I can dick around and smoke herb all day. Living indebted to corporations is NOT how its supposed to work.
